The Top Allergen Free Bakeries in Boston
Eating allergen free can be really difficult unless you're in a diverse city such as Boston. I haven't moved here officially but I am in the process of finishing my paperwork and packing my room (the joys of having roommates means having less stuff). I have dreamed of living in Boston for the past 2 years. When I first visited Boston in 2010 I hated the city, I hated the outspoken people and I hated the traffic. Now 7 years later it is a city that I have fallen in love with and adapted to. I am trying my hardest to heal my thyroid disease through clean eating and essential oils but sometimes I need something sweet to kick my cravings. I have found a few bakeries in Boston that cater to my allergen needs!
Finesse Pastry is #1 on my list because of their customer service, convenience, social media presence and their delicious pastries. Their macaroons are the most delicious, moist, soft, chewy and savory macaroons I have ever had! This company was founded in 2012 in Manchester, NH and every year that they were in New Hampshire they were voted the Best Desserts in NH and Best Bakery in Manchester. They also won Editor's Choice for New Hampshire Magazine's Best of NH so as you can see they are the best of the best. They recently opened a permanent location in the Boston Public Market located on Hanover Street. They offer a variety of French Pastries and gluten free macaroons! They change their flavors to match whichever season it is and so far my personal favorite has been fall and winter. They showcase pumpkin, egg nog and peppermint macaroons during these two seasons and they've also been known to create Patriot themed macaroons perfect for any Superbowl party.
Kane's Donuts is a local bakery that I love to stop by before my hour long commute from South Station. They offer a select amount of gluten and allergen free donuts that are surprisingly delicious! If you've ever had a GF donut I'm sure you know how dry and cake like they can be. These donuts are sugary, moist and taste just like a regular donut so much so that when I took my first bite I actually said "yum" out loud. Since 1995 they have been serving fresh donuts that are made daily using locally milled flour, farm-fresh eggs, local organic honey, fresh fruit, real bacon, chocolate and fresh spices! They have two locations, one in Saugus Massachusetts and one located conveniently in Boston. Much like other bakeries in the area, they offer an array of seasonal treats. For the winter they are currently offering a Peanut Butter Cup donut, Pistachio and a Marshmallow flavored donut. While they don't offer a huge selection of gluten-free (here's hoping that might change) they do offer an amazing variety of "regular" peanut free donuts that are sure to please any appetite. Look at their flavor list and menu before you stop in!
Something Sweet without Wheat
I must be honest, I haven't physically gone into this bakery but I have enjoyed their delicious cupcakes! It's always great when you can find a Gluten Free and Allergen Free bakery that has "normal" tasting food. You know that moment when you bite into something and it tastes too good so you don't believe it's gluten free, that's exactly how I felt the first time I tried their cupcakes. This bakery is 100% gluten and dairy free but this doesn't mean that their menu is lacking. They offer cupcakes, brownies, cakes, cookies, whoopie pies, tea bread and more! What's even better is that if you don't live close enough to their location to walk you can still find their products in over 100 retailers across Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Kallinis Berman and Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne are the founders of Georgetown Cupcakes and opened for business in 2008 in Washington D.C. Since they opened they have created their own TLC hit show DC Cupcakes, they've published a book titled "The Cupcake Diaries" and they have expanded their business in 5 different cities! This bakery offers daily specials, monthly specials, and seasonal creations. Their bakeries are not gluten or allergen free however they do offer a few gluten-free and vegan options daily! Try some of their delicious flavors such as Strawberry Lava Fudge, Vegan Apple Cinnamon, or their Gluten-free Chocolate Salted Caramel. They do advise that those who have a gluten allergy refrain from eating their baked goods because there is a chance of cross-contamination. If you're choosing to be gluten-free or you're just vegan you can happily enjoy their baked goods worry free!
