50 Things You Can Do to Be Happier & Healthier in 2019
I have vowed to make 2019 my best year yet, and with over 10 events and activities that we have planned already (since December of last year) I feel like I have so much to look forward to already. I’m making this year my healthiest, and started it with a bang by having surgery on January 2nd. Because I am taking this leap I wanted to share with you 50 things that YOU can do to be happier and healthier in 2019!
Build your DREAM Vision Board
I haven’t built mine yet but it’s going to be filled with travel, finishing my novel, beauty, fitness inspiration, and more! Make sure that you leave your own vision board where you can see it so that you can find inspiration every day.
Start Counting Your Calories
I mean it, count your calories. There are so many online “influencers” that I have seen that talk about how counting calories doesn’t matter, but those same women have been thin their whole lives. We each have different bodies, and we all have very different metabolisms. Eating 80 bananas and 5,000 calories a day might work for someone but I know for me personally I can only eat 1,200. To lose weight start with what you’re putting in your body and really focus on what it adds or doesn’t add to your body.
Add a Nightly Cleaning Routine
I can’t tell you how many times I have been stuck cleaning all night on a Friday, or all weekend long. The days are long especially if you’re a teacher like me but you need to find time to take care of your space. I ALWAYS notice when my home isn’t tidy because somehow it spills into my life and my life also becomes messy. Always have your home set up like you’re expecting guests!
Eat One Salad Every Day
When I moved to Colorado I knew that I needed to step up my eating game, so I added 1 salad to my meals every day and I saw such a difference!
CBD Oil isn’t all bad
If you have anxiety or chronic pain (even neck pain) and really don’t want to smoke then try CBD oil! It only has .04% THC so it doesn’t get you high it only uses the chemicals that take your physical pain away. I have really bad neck pain and used it on the back of my neck and it went away almost instantly.
Say Yes to Adventure
Be spontaneous and say YES more than you say NO! If your SO asks for you to go hiking with them tomorrow say yes. If they ask you to attend an expo they’ve been dying to go to..GO and don’t complain (totally guilty of this). If your friends want to fly in and see you for 2 weeks, say yes! Never pass up the opportunity to have fun or to create new memories.
7. Stay off Social Media More
I deactivated Facebook for almost 2 months and it’s the best SM detox that I’ve had, it literally changed my mental health and my life.
8. Stop Caring About what Other People Think
I don’t mean that you can be a jerk, or rude, or irresponsible or make terrible decisions. BUT if you are killing the game, working hard on your dreams, loving your new hair cut or new friends and you’re happy then don’t care what other people have to say.
9. Surround Yourself With Things That Make You Smile
Our home is the perfect combination of boho, modern, farmhouse and I am LOVING how cozy it is. Every time I come home I look forward to being in my home because instead of filling it with things that I want I add things that add value to my life. Whether it’s a green air cleaning plant, a soft rug to land my feet on, or a pretty vase I always choose items that have a purpose.
10. Listen to Podcasts
I have learned to much about myself and other women and how to rock my life just by listening to podcasts! I love Jenna Kutchers Podcast Gold Digger, and fully enjoy Pretty Basic by Remi Ashten and Alicia Marie.
11. STOP WEIGHING YOURSELF
Losing weight and getting fit means so much more when your clothes fit better. So instead of hopping on your scale pay attention at how your jeans fit!
12. Cut down your drinking
Empty calories, night you can’t remember, and dumb decisions made don’t exactly appeal to me. I’ll have maybe 1 drink every other week but barely finish it. I’d much rather have a nice glass of chocolate milk or fresh squeezed lemonade when I go out!
13. Find a Workout Routine, that Works
I started working out to College Clean Eating and after the first workout I KNEW that this one was “the one”. After my first week I started my period, went on vacation, got Strep Throat and a cold, and had surgery so I’ve been out for three weeks but I can’t wait to start working on my body again!
14. Drink More Water
Living in Colorado we NEED to drink more water especially when it comes to fighting illness and staying healthy. Purchase a large water bottle (mine is 64 oz) and drink more water than you think you need to. It’s not only great for your body but also your skin.
15. Don’t be Afraid to Say No
I love spending time with myself alone, or even just with my fiancé. Sometimes we go into separate rooms, I’ll light a candle, take a bubble bath, give myself a facial, and I’ll binge watch girly movies. By us having our own time it really helps both of us mentally and emotionally! It’s okay to say no, no matter what it may be.
16. Go Outside More
Getting some much needed fresh air and Vitamin D can REALLY make a difference, especially if you’re fighting the winter blues as you transition into spring. I have noticed that the more I move the better I feel, so go out and explore mother nature.
17. Travel More
You don’t have to spend a ton of money traveling to Bali, or Japan you can travel to a new city near you or explore your own town! The more you travel the more you’ll learn about yourself and about others.
18. Spend Less
Ask yourself “Will this bring joy to my life, do I actually need it”? There are so many things that I want, but not all of them are things that I need.
19. Wake Up Earlier
I used to wake up at 6am every morning, of course that was when I would go to sleep at 9pm. Try going to bed earlier to wake up earlier, it may be hard at first but your body will adjust and will love you for it!
20. No electronics 1 hour before bed
Turn off your electronics and pick up a book instead!
21. Practice a Skin Care Routine
Every week I exfoliate, I shave, I give myself a pampering treatment and I use my own DIY facial oil. I feel so much better now that I have a skincare routine and have seen such a difference.
22. Remember that Education is EVERYTHING
This doesn’t mean that you need to go to school but it does mean that you need to be learning, every day, something new.
23. Be More Open Minded
Always be open to other people, their beliefs, and backgrounds. No matter who someone loves, or what they look like always remember that we are all people, humans that have all been through something difficult in our lives. Once you change your way of thinking and stop hating, you life will become better!
24. Learn a New Language
This year I am going to focus on learning Spanish, why? Because I can.
25. Get a Job that you LOVE
Before I landed my new job I was at a job that made me feel like Alice in Wonderland, I was literally surrounded by mad people. Now that I love my job I actually wake up and look forward to going to work. Find a job that you LOVE because life is too short.
26. Be Thankful
If you appreciate what you have, you’ll spend less time wanting what others have.
27. Set Goals
I have SO many goals for myself this year not just for graduate school and my blog but also personal goals. They give me something to work towards and so many things to feel good about once I’ve completed them.
28. Start Journaling
My goal for this year is to write more in my journal. It can be really healing and sometimes you’ll discover so much more about yourself.
29. Clean Out the Toxic Junk!
Get rid of toxic beauty products, candles, bath items, plastics, and anything else in your home that could affect your health.
30. Listen to ASMR
ASMR is my favorite way to relax when I am stressed or just can’t sleep
31. Practice Meditation
Just like ASMR it’s so good for your mind, body, and soul
32. Explore your Spirituality
I’m planning on going to my first Buddhist temple, and I can’t wait!
33. Give Back
Volunteer at your local homeless shelter, read to kids, clean up your local beach, help out someone crossing the street, give a warm coat to someone who is homeless. Do anything that makes others feel loved and cared about because when you’re done you’ll feel good too.
34. Eat more Fruit and Veggies
You are what you eat, almost so why not fuel your body with what it actually needs! Fruits and vegetables are packed with the nutrients and vitamins that your body needs to keep going.
35. Keep a Calendar
I love using Google Calendar on my computer and on my phone, and for business I also have a white board wall calendar! This way I can keep my appointments and personal life separate from work, bills, and travels.
36. Make Your Bed
Yes, it may seem small but making your bed every morning can really set you up for a great day!
37. Listen to More Music
I love listening to music and really enjoy changing it up! I listen to coffee shop acoustic when I’m getting ready for work, I love pumped up pop when I workout, and when I’m sad I listen to sad music. Allow yourself to listen to music that inspires you and lets you feel.
38. Take Vitamins
I take probiotics and B12, they both make me feel amazing and I’ve noticed a difference in my energy levels!
39. Create Less Waste
Use less plastic and instead of buying pre-packaged meals use your mason jars and get bulk food from your local store, or even better shop at a farmers market! Use reusable cloth or mesh bags and stop throwing everything away, instead recycle.
40. READ MORE
Choose books that inspire you, self-help books can be incredible and can help you to grow.
41. Be Patient
It takes 66 days for a habit to stick, so don’t give up on yourself
42. Clean out Your Closet
I love going through my old clothes and donating them to family members, friends, and to Salvation Army. If I haven’t worn something in over a year I’ll get rid of it and make room for new pieces that I will actually love.
43. Toss the Junk Food
Right now, go to your pantry, your fridge, and your freezer and toss whatever is processed and full of sugars. Eat whole foods and stick to small treats like almonds or chocolate covered cashews. You don’t need to eat a pint of ice cream to satisfy your cravings and those chips in your cabinet won’t leave you satisfied.
44. Say Positive Things About Yourself & Accept Compliments
I am so guilty of turning something positive into something negative. I have had people tell me “I love your hair” and I’ll say “OMG thank you, my cut isn’t great so I’m growing it out”. I’ve also heard “wow you’re a great singer” and I’ll say something else negative. Make sure you just say thank you and appreciate the compliments and positive thoughts headed your way.
45. Don’t Say Bad Things About Other People
As the saying goes, if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all.
46. Have Daily Affirmations
Look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself how kind you are, how much your smile brightens every room, how happy you feel, how you’re a good person, how you LOVE who you are!
47. Say “I Love You" MORE
I tell my fiancé that I love him in the morning when he comes out of the shower, when he leaves for work, while he is at work, and when he comes home. I love telling him that I love him because my heart is so full of love. I also love to show him how much I love him, which I think is equally as important.
48. Take Chances
If there is something you’ve always wanted to do or have then go after it! If you want a raise then ask your boss, if you want a new job then start applying for one, if you want to date that person then ask them out, if you want to travel to that country then start saving money. Go for it, because life is too short not too.
49. Let Go of Negative People
In 2018 I cleaned out my relationships and friendships and my heart is much lighter. If you have a friend that uses you then realize that and let them go. If you have a family member that is negative and toxic then talk to them less, or if it’s really bad then let them go too. You shouldn’t have to feel obligated to keep anyone in your life especially if it’s effecting your mental or physical health.
50. Don’t be Afraid to be Yourself
This really just ties everything together. Try new things, wear new clothes, change your hair, meditate, change your beauty routine, write, create YouTube videos, start your own business, blog, become a dog walker, change your career, change your major, change your life. Do what you want to do and don’t be afraid of change.
